Associated Student Government Hiring

ASG Staff at their easter egg hunt event

Students looking for an exciting way to meet new people, learn some valuable skills, and give back to the school should look no further than the open positions with the Associated Student Government.

The ASG currently has openings from executive positions including, president and vice-president, to appointed positions which include senators, legislative and finance director, director of marketing, food pantry director and programming staff. Anyone who is interested in knowing exactly what they might get up to if they get involved with ASG can get a firsthand account from current members.

“There is a very fun side to working for ASG, for instance we often staff or attend student events,” said Mike Marquez, Food Pantry director. “There is a bureaucratic side, e.g. following the proper procedures in meeting and decision making. You meet a lot of students, fill out paperwork, and do some tangible good for students by advocating for student voices in meetings, hosting events to socialize and destress, and giving students things like snacks, meals, school supplies and more.”

Whether on the executive team or appointed team, members of ASG are looking out for the best interest of the student body and the school and doing what they can to make SFCC a safe and enjoyable environment for all students.

“I think it is really fun, our job is to speak for students and we get to interact with students and we try our best to connect everyone’s opinion and combine it into something we think they wanted and I think it is a great experience that you would want to have,” said Jeremy Hsieh, Senator #3.

Interested students can likely find a position that furthers an interest or even a potential degree field, such as Legislative and Finance Director Devin Moreno, who plans to pursue a degree in finance after leaving the Falls. He is able to get hands-on experience in his field of choice while serving the school community.

These are just a few examples of the many positions available and the things they are involved in at SFCC. Not only do they provide a great opportunity, but they are also paid positions, starting at minimum wage for most positions. They are part time, having a minimum requirement of 10 hours per week and capping at a maximum of 19 hours. Current staff find that those hour parameters make it easy to balance school, work, and ASG responsibilities.

“Some things in ASG can be rescheduled around class, for instance we plan a weekly staff meeting each quarter around class schedules,” said Maquez. “ASG has been very flexible working around my class schedule.”

Flexible schedule, fun activities, a sense of community, and getting paid, these are just the start to working for ASG. While this does paint a tempting and exciting image, there are a few eligibility requirements to join. Students must be enrolled for at least one quarter and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Each position must also acquire 20 signatures from their peers enrolled in classes then go through the interview process with ASG. More information on the appointment process can be found on the ASG webpage: https://sfcc.spokane.edu/For-Our-Students/Student-Engagement/Leadership.

There is much more to learn and experience by getting involved with the ASG, and the current staff are eager to welcome more people to the team and grow the community of students dedicated to giving back and serving their peers and school. And if anyone is still unsure, they have some words of encouragement for you.

“I would tell them you get to come here, run events and meet cool people,” said Concert and Comedy programmer Joshua Lee. “Why not?”
