The Communicator’s sister publication gears up to release a new issue.
The latest edition of Wire Harp is set to come out this May. Wire Harp is a creative arts magazine produced by and for SFCC students that has been in publication since 1984. The magazine showcases and highlights works created by SFCC students, whether that be art, writing, photography, and more.
“We are currently wrapping up proofing for this year’s Wire Harp,” said John Mujica, Advisor and Wire Harp’s Graphic Arts Editor. “I typically work closely with students to establish the artistic direction of the publication. I schedule the print production and ensure quality control of the piece.”
Though the next issue is ready to print, The Harp has had to deal with some hardships and new challenges. With these hardships also came solutions, as few editors commented.
“Some of the ups and downs of the process the past two years have been dealing with and trying to get the word and publication out to the student body and due to COVID we have had to learn new ways to connect and ensure the publication would still be printed,” Mujica said. “The ups are the resilient effort of the Wire Harp team, submitting student body, and determination to make sure things are printed. The downs are getting the books in the hands of the students, but luckily, I have a great team that is helping to strategize a way to do so for both 2020 and 2021’s editions.”
“Because of the current pandemic, we had to find our way through many new challenges,” Willow Johnson, one of Wire Harp’s student editors, said. “Since students weren’t really on campus while the Harp was accepting submissions, we got significantly less than we have in past years. Though we were lacking in quantity, we were exceeding in quality.”
According to Johnson, Mujica, and Laura Read, another Harp advisor, they are currently working on ways to get the paper distributed.
“We talked briefly about a parking lot meet-up to distribute copies, though nothing is set in stone,” said Johnson. “I do know that if we have a Coffee House event this year (the celebration where contributors read their poems and issues are distributed) it will likely be over Zoom.”
“The Wire Harp Club will be distributing the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Wire Harp in front of the Student Union Building at 11:30am on May 26th,” Mujica said. “Student’s who are published will be able to have 3 copies of this edition.”
Students who are looking forward to obtaining a copy of the latest Wire Harp issue, be sure to drop by the SUB at 11:30am on May 26.
