Steve’s On Cannon: high-end bikes and repair in Browne’s for 40 years

Steve w_customer1The little bike shop on Cannon Street offers a big selection of high-end bikes you can’t get anywhere else in Spokane.

Steven Loveland is the owner of Steve’s On Cannon, which is located on Cannon Street over in the Brown’s Addition neighborhood of Spokane. Born and raised in Spokane,  Loveland has been in the biking mechanical business for a little over 40 years. In 1984 and 1988, when the Olympic trials were here in Spokane, Steven was the tech support for the riders and just kept it going.

Inside the shop, top brands of mountain and road bikes hang from the ceiling, are parked out on the main floor and displayed in the windows. On any given day there are two or three bikes behind the counter undergoing mechanic work. Steve’s place offers a wide range of bikes, from high-dollar BMC, Bianchi, and MASI, all the way to Sevens. They work on, and know, all these brands and more.

“We work mostly on Sevens; we see a lot of Sevens,” Loveland said.

Thomas Lynch, an employee at Steve’s on Cannon and a former SFCC student who graduated in 1986 with a broadcasting degree; he even used to run the radio station, KSFC, that SFCC used to own and operate here on campus. Lynch has been working in bicycle shops since the early 80’s. He has been working at Steve’s On Cannon for about 3 months, though he has worked with Loveland before.

“Steve wanted a boutique shop of high-end bikes, saddle bags, and all the parts you couldn’t get anywhere else in town,” said Lynch. “Its a little bike shop where two old guys, with lots of ego, are here to serve your needs, not our wants.”

Thomas is a marketing director of sorts for the shop; Steven focuses mainly on the mechanical aspects of the job. Riders have been following Steven since 1984, some are still the same customers.

Steve’s On Cannon does not buy bikes from people, and they do not offer used bikes either. When someone brings in a bike to be worked on the customer, on average, get their bike back in 5 days.
