An SFCC Student was Struck by a Car crossing to a bus stop on February 25 Between 3:40 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. According to Campus Security.
Spokane Police department (SPD) that the driver was blinded by the setting sun as the student ran across the street. When asked about precautions to prevent additional Wrecks on campus Janette Gullickson explained that a plan is in the works.
“We are in conversation with Spokane Transit Authority (STA) with regards to making Students more aware on how to be safe when waiting for a bus or crossing traffic to get to a bus”, Gullickson said.
There are more Precautions that will be taken with the City and SFCC itself.
“The Office of Campus Safety (OCS) routinely sends out emails to help keep students aware and safe on and off campus”, Kenneth Demello Head of Campus Security said.
“The Ideal Campus safety measure would be to have the bus stop located on campus,” Gullickson said. “but to do that it would slow down bus schedule to and from campus and as a result STA isn’t anxious to do that”
James Bishopp a witness to the accident told Reporters “She was trying to catch a bus on the other side of the street and ran out from behind the 20 bus and when she ran the car nailed her in the middle of the street, The entire right side of her face was bloody and she was unconscious for a good 10 minutes, During that time I Directed traffic and i didn’t see security do anything until directed by a first responder”, Said Bishopp.
When asked why Demello told reporters “Even though we happened to have Security Personnel nearby when the Accident happened the street is in fact city property and we have no authority there so we tried to keep the situation calm and safe for other student while we waited for first responders to arrive and direct us” Said Demello.
In conclusion there are plans to make the campus safer and to keep other student from being in similar accident.
“ it is very hard to Balance compassion in situations like this but we as a campus ask students to be careful and just like your mothers told you when you were young we ask you look both ways before crossing the street and we also ask students not to be on there phones when they walk across the street to the bus stop”, Said Gullickson.
