New pianos have made their way into classrooms and practice rooms alike in building 15. The Music program is starting 2014 off with a bang, as they usher out the old and out of tune in order to do an exciting music refurnish.

Students involved with the music program may have noticed the new acoustic pianos entering the scene around Finals week last quarter, but it was hands off until Winter quarter 2014.

“We bought six Kawai acoustic pianos, and placed them in our various classrooms.” Gerald Krumbholz, the department chair, said. “The pianos will also be tuned/repaired professionally for the next five years” because of their contract that came with their purchase.”The new acoustics will likely be tuned twice a year, and maybe more depending on the situation.”

With the new pianos being wheeled into classrooms the older acoustics needed to find new homes.

“The acoustic pianos that were previously in the classrooms have been put into the practice rooms.” Krumbholz said.

The electric pianos that once resided in the practice rooms will soon be liquidated, which

“Could potentially provide a way for SFCC students to purchase a relatively new electric piano for a significantly discounted price.” Krumbholz said. “The electric pianos will first be turned over to the district, which will give first dibs to other schools, but will sell what’s left to the public.”

For some students returning to the music program the transition was a shock.

“When i saw the electric pianos in the hall I didn’t know what was going on.” Bennett Troxel, a second year student at SFCC, said. “The new pianos in the practice rooms totally blind-sided me. Nothing beats playing with weighted piano keys, and the sound of the new pianos is far superior. I’m totally happy”

Before this new installment, some of the pianos that had been used previously in the classrooms were “As old as 30 years, some of the pianos were even older, and had been donated to the school when it was built” Krumbholz said.
