The smell of freshly cut grass and the sounds of cleats thumping along to blaring country music can only mean one thing; the Spokane Falls Baseball season is underway.

The SFCC Baseball season would have started on the first weekend of March in Dalles, Oregon against both Clackamas CC and Linn-Benton CC, but sub freezing temperatures made the risk, not worth the reward.

“Last weekend we were supposed to open up the season, but we looked at the weather and it said it was 22 degrees but if felt like seven,”  Bobby Lee, the SFCC Baseball head coach, said, “I just didn’t want to get anybody hurt.”

The team will play four double header home games before heading over to the west side of the mountains to play two double headers on back to back days.

“We(’ll) go over to the west side and we (will) play Bellevue Tacoma and Pierce. (The) three teams who finished in the top four of the league last year. We’re looking forward to playing them,” Lee said.

The following Wednesday will kick of their conference season against the Columbia Basin team.

“Our Eastern Region is tough; so we’re excited to battle in it,” Lee said.

Two opponents the team is looking forward to facing are Treasure Valley, and Walla Walla.

“We put up a pretty good fight against Treasure Valley last season. I’m eager to see how we do against them,’” Colton Loomis, the SFCC starting right handed pitcher, said.

“We’d like to get Walla Walla back for kicking us out of the playoffs,” Danny Rowton, Sophomore at SFCC, said.

Most of the team and their coaches are excited to work with each other and see how the season works out for them.

“We (have) a lot of guys working real hard, and I think it’s a good group of guys,” Loomis said.

Rowton said, “We (have) good chemistry, everyone loves each other, we’re a big happy family.”

Coach Lee is hesitant to name any outstanding players.

“We have a group of sophomores that are pretty good athletes that I think may have a chance at moving on and a core group of freshman,” Lee said, “I like the group (but) I’d hate to single one out more than the other, but I do I like them.”

All and all the team is excited. They aren’t just excited to succeed in their season, but excited at the opportunity of playing together and making each other better. As to ‘how they will do?’ -We’re soon to find out.
