The Car Camping Experience

Without school, students may be left with copious amounts of free time. Car camping is a summertime activity many people enjoy, especially students who are on a budget. One of the many traits of car camping is that it can be done spontaneously. The only necessities are food, water, fuel for your car, and people you enjoy spending time with.

For those who plan on car camping for more than a day, bringing a portable gas stove can be helpful in heating water and preparing hot food.

SFCC student Dylan Stout recently went car camping for a night with his younger sister, Chloe.

“Chloe and I like to travel light, so we only packed the essentials,” said Dylan.

Traveling light allowed for more bedding space in the back of their car. They brought a two-burner stove, bedding, food, utensils, paper plates, a cooler for beverages, a pop-up lantern, folding chairs, cleaning supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, and baby wipes), a first-aid kit, and extra clothes.

“Lots of people believe that camping has to mean ‘roughing it’ which isn’t true,” said Chloe. “It is important to bring hygienic gear like toiletries and other personal items.”

A memorable car camping experience isn’t entirely based on what you bring, location plays a key role in the experience as well. Before their trip, the Stouts used a website called hipcamp.com. Hipcamp allows you to see whether or not a campsite requires booking and what activities are nearby.

“Planning the location is crucial,” said Chloe. “I’m usually sold on a spot if there are restrooms and shower stops around.”

The Stouts shared tips they learned while car camping. Before going to sleep, crack the windows slightly. This allows air flow and prevents nausea in the morning. Another critical part of camping is letting family members or friends know your route. If there was ever an emergency it is important that people know where you are. The last trick the Stouts talked about was rolling towels or blankets in the window to prevent others from looking in.

“I’m looking forward to the next time I can go car camping,” said Dylan. “It’s something my friends and I can enjoy together.”
