College has looked very different for those who attended through this last year. As vaccines are more available, and businesses start to open again, schools evaluate the possibilities for the upcoming year.
While many students have chosen to continue to shelter and take advantage of the growing list of courses offered online. Others have rejoined faculty on campus. The changes to campus have been ongoing as restrictions and protocols for COVID-19 have changed. All restrictions to campus are supported by the Campus Reopening Guide.
Spokane Falls Community College president Kimberlee Messina and Vise president of learning Jim Brady are working with other faculty to plan for the upcoming fall quarter.
“My hopes are that the transition back will come with alignment,” Brady said. ”By that I mean that we intend to increase our on ground presence in courses offered and as a campus, but look to align our transition back in form by safe practices and respectful of the likely mixed feelings of students and faculty/staff.”
Any students that are eager to continue the return to campus will be met with many class options to ease the readjustment. However, those who continue their online schooling journeys will continue to see that option in the fall.
“We are planning to be more in person in the fall compared to this academic year,” Messina said. ”We will also have more in person student support services. We will still have robust online classes and services as well.”
“I’m excited to take my first on-campus class in the fall,” Cierra Grove SFCC student said. “I hope to make new friends, but I’m mostly looking forward to getting to know my professors in person!”
Students like Grove will have the opportunity to experience college in more of a normal aspect this fall, with a few restrictions that have been in place over the last year.
“We are currently planning for in person classes with the 6 foot distancing and mask wearing given the current CDC guidelines and Governor’s higher education proclamation,” Messina said. “If this guidance changes, we can always increase class size accordingly.”
While students and faculty are eager to return to a normal learning and teaching environment SFCC is staying focused on the health and well being of students and faculty.
“As a college, we will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff,” Messina said. ”We are paying close attention to the guidelines and will make adjustments when appropriate.”
Registration for students with previous college history for summer and fall quarter is May17, 2021. For new students joining in the fall quarter registration is May 24, 2021.
