At SFCC, there are a wide variety of ways to have downtime and foster friendships on campus, and the game room in the student union building room 133 is one of these campus spaces that is accessible to all students..
In this room, you will find a wide variety of activities such as arcade machines, ping pong, and pool tables. The game room can be an ideal place for students to take a break and escape from the pressures of their classes
SFCC game room employee Benny Rentschler elaborates on this idea.
“It’s a good place to unwind for a bit after class; get some friends, relax,” Rentschler said. “I mean, we even have a TV that you can hook a game system on and play some games.”
Another game room employee, Kai, who didn’t provide their last name due to privacy concerns, talks about the abundance of pool tables that the game room offers, and how the game room can often be a facility that is unnoticed by students.
“This has never had six tables used at once,” Kai said. “I’d say most people don’t know about this place yet. I wish more people knew about it, it’d be cool if more people knew about this.”
Rentschler and Kai also talk about the game room’s adjacent empty room, which can provide a space for club meetings as well as a space to host events.
“I do see them being utilized two, maybe three times a week,” Rentschler said. “They do have all sorts of different events going on in there.”
“We will have the staff launching the new events coming up,” said Kai, regarding the adjacent room. “We can use this room for extra events and stuff.”
The student government also acknowledges the importance of the game room’s impact in creating an enjoyable safe space. When inquired, Cody Vierra, Director of Marketing for the Associated Student Government, writes about the game room’s impact for creating community within SFCC.
“Our goal with the rec room is to create a welcoming, inclusive space where students can relax, connect, and build community,” Vierra says. “We want it to be a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable being themselves and enjoying each other’s company.”
