Editor-in-Chiefs come and go each quarter in the SFCC newsroom. About 11 years ago Chris McBride took on the position from 2005 to 2006. Though his Communicator days are far behind him, he still finds himself reflecting on the past when it comes to his new endeavors.

“I can ask questions. I can see things a little deeper, because I want to know about the subject. Journalism kind of focuses on that. It’s an incredible life skill,” McBride said.

He got married while being the editor. After he retired from The Communicator he stopped school to work for a while. He actually worked for the Spokesman Review. Eventually he decided to move to Seattle where he picked up his degree in sociology. Currently he is studying law at the University of Washington.

“It was fantastic working for the Communicator. It really opened up many doors for me. Really up until that point it was hard for me to find things that I was passionate about. It also showed me I was a pretty decent leader,” McBride said.

When he joined the Communicator staff it was actually the current advisor, Jason Nix, first year working. He agrees that Nix brought a passionate atmosphere to the paper.

“ Under the tutelage of Jason Nix, he taught me how to communicate in the adult world, and how to act professionally,” McBride said.

The momentum he has now is directed towards finishing up law school and becoming the lawyer he’s been striving for.

“I am interested in civil litigations for low income families and specifically within the area of child advocacy. I want to represent children,” McBride said. “I’ve always wanted to help kids. I feel as though children are marginalized in our society legally.”

As advice goes..

“It’s harder than you would think. My only advice would really be if you’re not enjoying it then it might not be for you. The Communicator is inherently enjoyable if you’re passionate about the work,” McBride said.

No matter what each Editor-in-Chief has left some type of mark on the paper and vice versa.

“I really look back fondly at my time with the Communicator. Every time I report back to the Communicator I notice that the passion there is still alive,” McBride said. “I have a lot to thank for the confidence I have now from working on the Communicator.”
