This is the second accident to occur in the same crosswalk in less than two months. A student’s bike was destroyed when he was hit by a car in the crosswalk leading across Fort George Wright Drive to Spokane Falls Campus inflicting minor injuries on the cyclist.
According to a police report the more recent accident took place on Wednesday  April 9th at 8:25am. The student , Jordan DeWitt, was riding his bike against a “Don’t Walk” signal and was hit by a Chrysler 300 going through a yellow light.
According to Dewitt he had just taken his bike off of the front rack of the bus and started riding across the crosswalk when he saw a car coming and had seconds to turn and move with the collision.
The driver stopped and got out to check on him and a witness dialed 911.
“The car hit the front wheel and the whole bike flipped in this like, explosion of dust” Caya Berndt, another witness,  said.
Despite some bruising and what Berndt described as “nasty, nasty road rash” , Dewitt says he was lucky “..for getting hit by a vehicle and how fast he was going..it was minor compared to what it could have been.” “Just a huge inconvenience.” DeWitt said.
This is the second accident to occur in the same crosswalk in less than two months. On February 25th , a student was injured by a car while trying to catch a bus.
The crosswalk itself isn’t on school property, but the school is working with STA (Spokane Transit Authority) and is considering all available options according to Kenneth DeMello of SFCC security. DeMello also said security only has the authority to issue traffic citations in the crosswalk.
“I’ve never once felt unsafe crossing there; the one thing that concerns me is there are no posted speed signs” Dewitt said about the crosswalk.
In a statement made as to the accident on February 25th, SFCC President Janet Gullickson said that the STA is in charge of the location of the bus stop, and “The ideal campus safety measure would be to have the bus stop located on campus,” but said that because this might slow the bus schedule the STA may not want to move it.
