Chemistry on and off the field

Baseball

Team chemistry can be the difference between a normal team and the team that wins the Championship game.

Chemistry can be defined as the interaction of one personality with another. Currently sitting in 2nd place in their division the SFCC baseball team sites their team Chemistry as huge part of their success.

Colin Peterson, a right handed 1st basemen that was recruited from Bellingham WA, is currently a sophomore in his final season as a Sasquatch. He believes the chemistry that he and his teammates share is what kept him around.

“When I first came over here to play ball I came with two of my friends,” Peterson said. “they ended up quitting but I stuck around,

“it’s fun just to come out here and hang with the guys…. we have great chemistry,”

While focusing on taking this season as far as it can go, Peterson is looking to continue playing ball at the college level with hopes of one day being recruited.

“I want to play Division 1 ball and I’ve talked to some guys from South Missouri State, Southern Oregon, University of Washington and North Carolina,” Peterson said. “I’ve also talked to some guys from the Atlanta Braves,

“but I’m not too worried about them yet. I’m not at that level yet so I’m just focusing on getting to that level.”

The Sasquatch started their season in early March but have been practicing since Fall Quarter. When walking around the baseball team one can’t help to notice all of the laughing from the players and the coaches as they go through their drills and warm ups.

“We give eachother a lot of shit but it’s all out of fun,” Peterson said.

Freshman catcher Austin Allen was recruited from Kalispell MT. Being a new kid in town and not knowing much about Spokane he spent the majority of his time with his teammates and getting his school work done.

“I really only hang out with the guys on the team,” Allen said Most of us live in the same apartments so we see each other all the time.”

Like Peterson, Allen is on a scholarship and is contractually obligated to perform in the classroom as well as on the field.

“Balancing time between school and ball is something i take seriously,” Allen said. “after practice is when i get most of my work done and since i’m on scholarship i make sure i get my job done.”

While hitting fly balls to the outfielders and reciting where each player he hit to came,Head Coach Bobby Lee agreed that the bond he and his team have is strong.

Lee cited the hard work from all of his players, especially his sophomores.

“We got a special group of kids and they have chance to have a  special season.”

The Sasquatch host their next home game Wednesday April, 24 at 1 p.m.
