Some students smoke marijuana to help with their classes and studies.
The use of marijuana is now legal in Washington for people who are 21 or over. Before this, the use of marijuana was only legally available to patients who were prescribed it from their doctors.
“I smoke almost every day before class because I achieve a substantial amount of relaxation,” said Zack Many, a student at SFCC. “My anxiety and stress simmers down and I can think at a more innovative level.”
“It keeps me in class and I want to do my work,” said Shaquille Worthy a student at SFCC said. “I don’t smoke on campus though. Smoking weed is a lot better than having to take a prescribed pill, in my opinion.”
Many and Worthy have been attending SFCC for at least a year and both have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. They believe that the use of marijuana helps their concentration and keeps them interested in the class.
“Smoking helps with my studies substantially,” said Tywone Robinson, a member of the Green Club at SFCC. The Green Club is not an official SFCC club, but a group of SFCC students who get together for recreational marijuana use off-campus. “I Like to smoke in the middle of my studies because it makes me work faster and it keeps me more interested and creative.”
According to Worthy, Many, and Robinson, marijuana is a self prescribed medicine that helps their daily functions .
“I was a little less focused, I could tell that I wasn’t doing my best work,” Worthy said. “I’m not as creative.”
Many has pointed out that smoking before class can sometimes have a negative outcome.
“It does not really affect me to the point where my grades start to change,” he said. “When I smoke it does help, but at the same time I am more easily distracted. So sometimes I prefer to not smoke before class.”
The use of marijuana on campus is not permitted in any way. It is still considered as going to the class under the influence and students can lose federal funding for having marijuana on their person.
