Sasquatch sighted on campus; Name is Skitch

In 2008 Community Colleges of Spokane adopted the mysterious Sasquatch as their schools’ mascot.

They named him Skitch, and for the past five years he has been the face of CCS schools.

The actor in Skitch is sworn to secrecy; they are not allowed to speak a work or even laugh at someone’s joke when in character. Only a few select people know the exact identification of the person wearing the Skitch suit. Those people are also sworn to secrecy.

“The idea for Skitch came along about 6 years ago, from a few students and I,” said Heather McKenzie. “These people were at a school conference looking for a way to promote their school activities. When the idea finally came together, the school purchased two sasquatch suits. Then in 2008, he arrived on campus for the first time.”

Skitch has a silent, but funny, and unpredictable attitude. He is always excited and ready to join in any activity taking place. He is often found in random places.

He was caught at the 5th annual Pride Parade pole-dancing on a tree, and it was said he was also sited skiing at Mt. Spokane, forest walking in Deer Park, and even jumping around at Sky High Sports.

But one does not simply jump in the Skitch suit and run around doing as they please. Any student who is hired to be Skitch has take a training course.

“They have to learn the swagger of Skitch’s character,” McKenzie said. “He has a certain walk and attitude that everyone who plays him has to learn.”

ASG students are the only students who know who Skitch is and how to find him. They leave no trail for outsiders to find out who he is. When the Communicator set up their appointment for Skitch’s photoshoot ASG students got quiet about where he was.

“Let me go look in the woods and I’ll get back to you,” Alicia Villa, SFCC Student Body President said.

Playing off that they don’t know who it is helps to preserve the fun of Skitch.

“If people knew who Skitch was it would ruin all the fun.” McKenzie said. “Thats also why we have different people play Skitch so people can’t pick up on who it is.”

Students or clubs interested in renting Skitch for the day can contact McKenzie via email.

“He has a busy schedule so clubs and students would need to plan ahead.” McKenzie said.
