Last Wednesday’s doubleheader losses to The Walla Walla Warriors put the SFCC Sasquatch at 6 – 8 regionally and 14 – 12 over-all. The crowd sat outside in the cold rain to watch the Sasquatch take Walla Walla into extra innings only to give up 3 points in the 10th for their second loss of the day.
“Anytime you lose you know, it’s a pretty big loss, especially with how competitive the whole eastern region is.” A.J. Proszek, the Sasquatch pitching coach, said.
Eight of the team’s 12 losses have been in their own region, and Walla Walla’s win over Spokane Falls put the Warriors in a first place tie with Treasure Valley.
Starting Pitcher Colton Loomis played well throughout most of the first game but struggled in the fourth and fifth innings giving up four points.
“I left the ball over the plate and couldn’t come up big in tough situations.” Loomis said, “We tried to bounce back and just couldn’t get it done.”
Tough inning or not, Loomis struck out eight and held the Warriors batters to only nine hits in eight innings.
In the seventh inning, catcher Danny Rowton hit a double out to the fence which brought in runner, Lukas Denny. After that, number 17, Jordan Mcgowen, hit a big home-run which brought in Rowton and put SFCC within one going into the eighth.
In the ninth inning Cameron Lowe came in to relieve Loomis, but the Warriors batters proved to be too much for him and he gave up two more points, which put the game out of reach for Spokane’s batters who went three and away to end the game.
Head coach Bobbi Lee had some expletives to share with his team between games, as the players hung their heads and listened.
Playing a double header can be tough on players after a loss.
“It’s hard on you mentally especially,” Loomis said.
In the fourth inning of the second game, the Sasquatch defense started to bend, giving up one run but preventing another score with the bases loaded.
With bases loaded, Sasquatch short-stop Logan Jackson is walked and the Sasquatch tie the game. He is followed by Michael Heaton who got a base hit and one RBI before Lucas Denny got tagged out on first to end the fifth inning.
They held on to the lead until the top of the eighth inning, when starting pitcher Blake Andres, who gave up only three runs and struck out six, was replaced by Zachary Haggett. The warriors tied up the score with a runner batted in off a pop fly to the outfield.
This was followed by two runners batted in off a single. The batter was caught in a game of pickle between first and second before he was tagged out.
At the bottom of the ninth, down by two, Sasquatch infielder Patrick O’Brien and outfielder Kyle Weiler, both stole second, and both were batted in by infielder Logan Jackson, which brought the game to a tie.
In the 10th inning the warriors were able to pull away, scoring three and leaving the Sasquatch batters unable to catch back up.
The final score was 7 – 3 warriors
