Artist Spotlight: Chef Joshua Martin

Joshua Martin, an instructor at SCC in the Culinary Arts department, is an award winning chef and a drummer in the local band Buffalo Jones.

Martin has received both gold and silver medals in the American Culinary Foundation’s Hot Food competitions.

The Spokesman Review states that Martin has also competed in the ZAGG central European culinary showcase in 2006 and 2008, this is an international showcase.

Martin has also judged both Pro-Start and FCCLA culinary competitions. His hometown is Detroit, Michigan where he attended the Culinary Studies Institute from 2004-2006, he then left to receive his diploma from DCT hotel and restaurant in Vitznau, Switzerland.  Martin had explained that his passion for cooking had begun at the Detroit  Athletic Club.

“Getting to do what I love, which is teaching people how to cook,” Martin said.

With all of that on his resume, he chose to share his passion with the Culinary Arts Program at Spokane Community College. The Communicator took a moment to speak to Martin about his passions as an instructor.

“I have been playing the drums since the age of 12 and the guitar since the age of 9,” Martin said.

Buffalo Jones, an Alternative/Rock band based out of the Spokane, Washington. He provides the drive behind the music, he is the drummer. Buffalo Jones’ new project ‘This Is Not The End Of The World’ is set to be released on Nov. 14. You can also pre-order the album from now until the release date.

“Favorite venue would have to be The Big Dipper, because the staff and other musicians that play there are very supportive.” Martin said.

“Music had started as an outlet to get away from the struggle of work,“ Martin said.
